We went to his house on a rainy late afternoon in São Paulo and discovered that Gus is a lowkey collector of unusual sneakers. To represent this collection, we photographed his @reebokclassics Omni Pump collab with Atmos!
“I’m a guy that loves formalities, I love wearing suits, and to wear suits with colorful and bizarre sneakers – I basically have bizarre sneakers. And I think that’s why you guys like them.
I host the podcast Papo Torto at Estadão with PC Siqueira, I also write for a bunch of different places about video games, culture, and other stuff. I write scripts for television, I’m a philosopher on gastronomical and anthropophagical matters – not in the sense of actually eating people but just people eating, and recently I did the subtitles for some institutional videos for a shoe brand called Timberland because everybody needs money right?
I never entered the academic world, never went to college, but I feel that my contributions are at the same level as dissertations from philosophical Masters and Doctorates when talking about the relation of Occidental culture with food”.
Gus, what’s your relationship with sneakers in general?
gusI believe that a man should not leave the house with shorts and flip flops on, so that’s why I have sneakers and pants – because that’s what separates the boys from men. Do I leave the house with shorts and flip flops? Sometimes, but aren’t we all boys from time to time?
I’ve always been crazy for sneakers in very weird ways. When I was a kid I had a thing for boots, I had Chico Bento’s little boots, I loved that low cut little boots. I watched a lot of Highlander, and he always wearing those boots, and to me, that was the pinnacle of being a man. Not to mention motorcycle boots because of The Future Terminator 2. So, I had boots just like those when I was a kid, but I didn’t pay much attention for sneakers.
Then there was a moment when I liked Rock, I liked the devil – Wore full black only, right? So all the sneakers I had were Black and boring. Eventually, I began to change, and the first colorful sneaker I had was a Nike Shox, that first model blue and black. I got this sneaker for Christmas in 2001, also got a PlayStation 2 and a Linkin Park CD. And it was this combo that ruined my life and got to where I am today. From that point, I started to understand that colorful sneakers were cool, but I only really got into it when I was 17 or 18 years old.
The first sneakers that I bought deliberately because they were different, was a Run Athletics x Mario Nintendo Legacy, that were produced only 800 pairs in the world. They are ugly as fuck, white, which I don’t really like because they get dirty too quick but I like them because they are Mario’s. Since then, cool stuff that’s not too expensive, I buy. Even so that these rare ones I have, I only bought them because I thought they looked nice. I’m glad for my recent discovery and financial security that these sneakers can give me (laughs).
And what’s your relationship with this Pump?
gusIt’s really hard to choose a favorite pair, but if I was forced to pick just one, it would be this one. It’s a Reebok made in collaboration with Atmos, a revival of the Pump – it has a pump button but it doesn’t pump. They are the sneakers with the softest and comfiest inside that I have, it feels like a bed in there.
They are very special to me because not only are they really different, but they have colorful polka dots on them, purple and green details and that pump look that makes them just a different looking sneaker. Since they’re really comfortable, they’ve accompanied me through numerous jobs that required days and days of walking, it’s the sneaker that provides me with the most comfortable and stylish walks. It’s great combining useful with pleasant.
Do you have any specific story with them?
gusI had them on when I met Ice-T and watched him perform Cop Killer right in front of me at a party with 100 people. I was wearing them when I met the creator of Mortal Kombat, Ed Boon; I was wearing them when I got into an argument with the producer of Tekken and we almost go into a fight. A lot of cool stuff happened when I was wearing these sneakers, for example, I watched comedy shows from all the comedians I admire. Since I remember it was these sneakers I had on during those moments, I know I lived those stories with them and they were with me during very important moments. I really like them and they are the kind of sneaker that is so colorful that they don’t need to go with anything, even if I’m wearing all black and I put them on, it gives you that extra flare.
